FC Bayern Munich claimed their 30th Bundesliga title on Tuesday when they defeated SV Werder Bremen 1-0 at the Weserstadion in Bremen, Germany.
Bayern clinched the league title with two games remaining in the 2019-2020 Bundesliga season. Bayern went 24-4-4 which totaled to 76 points. Borussia Dortmund was seven points behind Bayern entering Tuesday, but the title fight was over when Bayern were victorious against Bremen.
In the title clinching game, Bundesliga leading scorer Robert Lewandowski netted his 31st league goal of the season and his 45th in all competitions. In the 43rd minute, Robert Lewandowski found himself alone on goal and hit a half volley into the back of the goal, giving Bayern a 1-0 lead heading into the half.
In the 79th minute of the match, Canadian international Alphonso Davies was sent off after being given a second yellow card on a questionable call. Bayern had to finish the match with 10 men on the pitch.
Bremen began to press Bayern because of the man advantage. Bremen had a few chances to attack a 10 man Bayern side.
Bremen's best chance to tie the game was in the 89th minute. Goalkeeper Manuel Neuer had to stretch across the face of goal to stop the ball from going into the far corner of the net when Werder Bremen had pressure in the box.
With the final whistle coming in the 94th minute of stoppage time, Bayern were officially the champions of Germany.
This is Bayern manager Hans-Dieter Flick’s first title as the boss after he took over managerial duties from Niko Kovać on November 3, 2019. Kovać’s final game was a 5-1 loss to Eintracht Frankfurt. In April, Flick was given a contract through 2023. Bayern is 23-1-2 under Flick across all competitions.
Bayern players dominated the individual statistics table in the Bundesliga this season. Robert Lewandowski currently has the most goals with 31, Thomas Müller has the most assists with 20. Kimmich dominated possession and distance covered.
This is a Bundesliga record eighth straight title for Bayern. Bayern will take on Bayer Leverkusen in the DFB Pokal final on July 4. A win would ensure Bayern with at least the double, with the possibility of winning the treble depending on their performance in the UEFA Champions League.
Winning the title with a few games remaining in the season allows Bayern to give rest to some of their first team players. Bayern has had a few injuries this season and they currently await the return of players like Corentin Tolisso, Philippe Coutinho, Niklas Süle and Thiago. Expect the team to be fresh and ready in their upcoming European matches and German Cup Final.
