The AFC West will be lopsided again this year, as the Kansas City Chiefs are looking just as good as last season. Simultaneously, the remaining three teams are struggling to hang onto 2nd place in the division. Here are my record predictions, a possible MVP, and a prospect to watch during the season
Las Vegas Raiders
The newly named Las Vegas Raiders will still be the same old team of the past by the time the season starts. Despite moving to a new city looking for a fresh start, they didn’t get it. Derek Carr has been inconsistent over the past few seasons, and Jon Gruden is doing a terrible job at the head coach position. I barely see them winning four or five games this season.
Record Prediction: 4-12
MVP: Derek Carr (QB)
You are probably wondering how I can name Derek Carr the team’s MVP when I just bashed him for being inconsistent. Well, for one thing, last season he threw for over 4000 yards passing, had 21 passing touchdowns and only eight interceptions. As well as the numbers go, Derek Carr has been a positive leader on and off the field. I expect him to have similar numbers to last season, with the only difference being the number of interceptions he will throw.
Prospect: Henry Ruggs III (WR)
Henry Ruggs III was a great draft selection by Mike Mayock and Jon Gruden in this year’s NFL draft. Ruggs III, who last season finished with 40 receptions, 746 receiving yards, and seven touchdowns in 12 games.
Los Angeles Chargers
The Los Angeles Chargers will be a good team, but not great. They will struggle on the ball’s defensive side to get stops, as they will heavily rely on their offence to bail them out. I am not worried about the Chargers offence; I am concerned that their defence that will struggle. That is why I see them finishing above the Broncos and Raiders, but below the Chiefs.
Record Prediction: 8-8
MVP: Keenan Allen (WR)
Keenan Allen will need to have another pro bowl season if the Chargers want any chance at winning eight games. Allen, who last season finished with 104 receptions, 1199 receiving yards and six touchdowns. I expect him to have similar numbers this season, as he is a key to the Charger’s success.
Prospect: Justin Herbert (QB)
Despite not winning the starting job over Tyrod Taylor, Justin Herbert is still going to be an exciting player to watch for in the future years. The Oregon product finished last season with 32 touchdowns, six interceptions and threw for over 3400 yards. In the coming years, I expect him to be a starting quarterback and make a name for himself.
Denver Broncos
The Denver Broncos will not be a great team this season. Despite seeming to have the pieces that a team would need to win a Superbowl. They aren’t there yet as Drew Lock is yet to prove that he can be a leader for the team, and therefore I believe that they will miss the playoffs and be looking for another high draft pick.
Record Prediction: 6-10
MVP: Von Miller (LB)
Von Miller, still to this day, is one of the most explosive players in the NFL on the defensive side, and that is why I see him being the team MVP for the Broncos. Miller last season finished with 33 solo tackles, ten tackles for loss and 20 QB hits, and eight sacks. That is why for me, he is the MVP, and he will need to have an MVP type season for the Broncos to win six games this season.
Prospect: Jerry Jeudy (WR)
Jerry Jeudy was the right choice for the Denver Broncos; they are sure to be happy when he hits the field for the first time. Needing receivers for Drew Lock to throw the ball to, Denver got a stud of an athlete from Alabama. Jeudy last season finished with 77 receptions, 1163 receiving yards and 11 touchdowns. I expect him to have similar numbers this season during his rookie campaign in Denver.
Kansas City Chiefs
The Kansas City Chiefs have looked the same from their Superbowl winning season, a season ago. Plus, with the addition of Clyde Edwards-Helaire from LSU will boost their offence even more. I expect to see the Chiefs atop their respective division and fight for the number one seed in the AFC alongside the Baltimore Ravens.
Record Prediction 13-3
MVP: Patrick Mahomes
The clear choice for team MVP is Patrick Mahomes, as he led his team to the big game and led a comeback in the fourth quarter against a stifling 49er defence. Mahomes last season finished with over 4000 yards passing, 26 touchdown passes and only five interceptions in 13 games played. I expect him to have similar numbers this season, and maybe even lead Kansas City back to the Super bowl.
Prospect: Clyde Edwards-Helaire (RB)
Clyde Edwards-Helaire from LSU will immediately impact the Chief’s offence. The LSU product finished last season with over 1400 rushing yards and 16 rushing touchdowns, while also helping LSU win the national championship. I expect him to finish his rookie campaign with similar numbers as he will be one rookie to watch during this season.
